How to provide an innovative environment:

• Expose innovators to customer/market/business problems

• Recognize that key individuals not teams generally contribute break-through innovations

• Respect intellectual freedom

• Take advantage of academia-industry interactions

• Impose minimal structure, refrain from frequent progress reviews

• Minimize short term pressure

• Evaluate short term performance based on scientific quality not on short term outcomes 

For large organizations: Build in-house expertise in key technology areas for better decisions on inhouse product development and business development activities. This effort should not be focused on specific short term products, but on knowledge generation.
